Are swordtails a good addition to the community tank?

I have a 40 gal and 20 gal, the 20 gal has a lid but the 40 gal doesn't. Wat tank would be better for 3 swordtails (a male and 2 females) to go in? And wat are the nicest ones to tetras, guppies, panda platies, cherry barbs and albino cherry barbs, albino and juli cories, shrimp, albino bristlenose plecos, and a male dwarf Gouramis? Those or divided into the 2 tanks not just one btw!. Is it ok to get 2 different kinds of swordtails and put them in the same tank? Cuz last time I had them I got almost every kind and one male got really dominant and sadly I had to flush him:( so Im a bit catious.
