Im getting sick and tired of facebook's horibble way of keeping privacy. How to adjust some settings?

So yeah i just realized my crazy sensation for my favorite singer is actually being seen on everyone's homepage...why is facebook so terrible with privacy? Anyway, i was wondering how I can change the settings to keeping the pictures, statuses, etc that i like, to be private or only seen on my page and not the entire world? =_=
